In this tutorial, we are going to install VMware Player in Windows 10 local desktop. VMware Player is a highly stable, mature solution that allows running another operating system as a VM on your PC. VMware Player is free for personal, non-commercial use. If you would like to learn about virtualization at home, you can use VMware Workstation Player for free. The minimum PC requirements to install and use VMware Player are 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, and 150 MB hard disk, the more the better.
Since we are going to learn about Docker and why Docker is used intensely, it’s good to have VMware installed to play with multiple operating systems. With VMware, you can learn and install the operating system or a Linux flavor you love.
Make sure to have virtualization enabled on your computer. Let’s install VMware Player on our Windows 10 laptop.
We will select the latest version of the player which is 16.0, the current version that is downloaded will be VMware Workstation 16.1.2 Player. Go to the downloads section to download it.
As you can see down below, the version is pre-selected. However, you can still change and download the older version too. Hit the “Download Now” button and the VMware Player will be downloaded. It’s a 215MB executable file.
Now go to the Downloads folder on your computer and find the executable application. Double-click on it to start installing VMware Workstation Player. In the next step, there will be a prompt saying “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?” Click on Yes to proceed. It will take you to the VMware Workstation Player setup wizard.
In the next prompt, it will ask for the license agreement. Click on the checkbox right to it and move to the next step.
This is the destination folder where your VMware Player and its binaries will be installed. You can change the folder but I would recommend keeping it default. The other two options down below are optional, it’s your choice to check or uncheck them. Click on the next button to proceed.
In the next step, there are 2 option user experience settings to check for the product updates and the VMware customer experience improvement program. Whether you check both options or not, it’s totally up to you.
Click next to proceed.
For your own convenience, create shortcuts for VMware Workstation 16 Player in Desktop and Start Menu. Click next to move forward, we are just a step away from the installation.
We are ready to install VMware Player on our computer. Click the install button to start the installation.
The installation of the player is in progress and it will take only a couple of moments to complete it.
Congratulations! VMware is installed in our Windows 10 machine. Click the Finish button to start working with the VMware player.
Important: We don’t need to put the License as we are using for our personal use.
Finally, restart the system so that any changes made during the installation can take place. A reboot is necessary and recommended.
